The Original United

Sheffield United formed in 1889 taking the name from the Sheffield United Cricket Club who played at Bramall Lane. Newcastle United formed in 1892 and entered the top flight 5 years after Sheffield United.  Not until 1902 did a relatively small Manchester club follow suit and copy the name United, joining the the first and second Uniteds in the first division in 1906.
